Remote Appearances

Appearing remotely enhances access to the court and creates many efficiencies for court users.

The Plumas Superior Court offers different platforms to remotely appear for proceedings: Zoom and CourtCall. Information related to policies and procedures for utilizing each is provided on this page.

Zoom supports video as well as audio and is available free of charge. CourtCall is audio (telephonic) only and may require payment of a fee to CourtCall for the use of their service.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Recording a court proceeding through any means is prohibited unless/until the judicial officer specifically grants permission to record as per CA Rules of Court, Rule 1.150(c) & (d).

A violation of this rule may result in the imposition of sanctions as set forth in subsection (f) of Rule 1.150.

The court does not provide technical support for remote appearance participants. Please contact the Zoom Help Center, CourtCall Support, your local IT support, or seek other online guidance if you are experiencing issues with your connection.

Traffic Appearances

To schedule a Zoom appearance for Traffic Court; please call the Clerk's Office at (530) 283-6232 or email Michelle.McBeen@plumas.courts.ca.gov at least five court days before the hearing date to request a remote appearance.

If approved, please refer to the Zoom Link for the respective department below and join the Zoom meeting at the time of your scheduled appearance.

To be considered, requests for remote traffic appearances must be made at least five court days prior to the scheduled date of the hearing.

Non-Criminal Appearances

Adoption, Civil, Small Claims, Family Law & Probate

California Rules of Court (CRC), rule 3.672 and Code of Civil Procedure (CCP) § 367.75 have implemented specific procedures and requirements for parties appearing remotely in civil matters. Plumas Superior Court will adhere to CRC 3.672 and CCP § 367.75 for remote civil proceedings.


Parties can request a Remote Appearance in these non-criminal proceedings by using Judicial Council forms RA-010 and RA-015 pursuant to CRC 3.672 and CCP § 367.75. Parties are required to reference the CRC 3.672 and CCP § 367.75 for service and filing requirements.

Civil Forms

Juvenile Dependency Appearances

California Rules of Court (CRC), rule 3.672 and Code of Civil Procedure (CCP) § 367.75 outline specific procedures for parties appearing remotely in juvenile dependency matters.

Parties can request a Remote Appearance in juvenile dependency proceedings by using Judicial Council forms RA-025, RA-030 and RA-015 pursuant to CRC 3.672 and CCP § 367.75. Parties are required to reference the CRC 3.672 and CCP § 367.75 for service and filing requirements.

Juvenile Dependency Forms

Remote appearances in juvenile justice proceedings, as defined under Welfare and Institutions Code §§ 601 and 602, are permitted upon request and approval by the Court. The procedures for remote appearances in these cases are outlined in Welfare and Institutions Code § 679.5.

Requesting a Juvenile Justice Remote Appearance

To request a remote appearance in a juvenile justice case:

  1. File a completed Request for Remote Appearance (form PSC-RA-040) with the Court at least five court days before the hearing date.
  2. Serve a copy of your completed request on all other parties involved in the case at least five court days before the hearing date.
  3. The request will be reviewed by the judge presiding over the case.
  4. If approved by the Court and if there are no objections, you will be permitted to appear remotely.

Once approved, refer to the Zoom Meeting Connection section below for department-specific connection details to join the remote proceeding.

If, at any time, the judicial officer determines that a personal appearance is necessary, the Court may continue the matter and require in-person appearance.

Criminal Appearances

Requesting a Criminal Remote Appearance

To request a remote appearance in a criminal case:

  1. File a completed Request for Remote Appearance (form PSC-RA-040) with the Court at least five court days before the hearing date.
  2. Serve a copy of your completed request on all other parties involved in the case at least five court days before the hearing date.
  3. The request will be reviewed by the judge presiding over the case.
  4. If approved by the Court and if there are no objections, you will be permitted to appear remotely.

Remote appearances in criminal cases are generally permitted under the following guidelines:

Misdemeanors
  • Defendants and attorneys may appear remotely in misdemeanor proceedings if the Court determines such appearances appropriate and practical.
  • A request must be filed with the Court and approved before a remote appearance will be allowed.
  • Misdemeanor trials: The judge presiding has discretion to allow or deny remote appearances in misdemeanor trials.
Felonies
  • Defendants and attorneys may appear remotely in felony proceedings if the Court finds such appearances appropriate and practical.
  • A request must be filed with the Court and approved before a remote appearance will be permitted.
  • Post-conviction relief proceedings and other proceedings otherwise provided by law may be conducted remotely.
  • Felony Trials: Remote appearances in felony trials are at the discretion of the judge presiding.
Witnesses
  • Witnesses can appear remotely only with prior Court approval, requested through a petition to the Court.

Please Note: Any approved remote appearances by Counsel without access to Zoom must be done by using CourtCall (see below for more information).

 

Any approved remote appearance for a party appearing without an attorney who does not have access to Zoom can appear by phone by calling the Zoom Conference Phone for the respective department below. The Parties must then wait on the line and mute their phones until the Court calls their case.

Note: You should be informed which department your hearing will be held in when your remote appearance request is approved. If you were not and do not know which department you are to appear in, please call the court at (530) 283-6232 for assistance.

Note: When logging into Zoom you must ensure the name you use to join the meeting is your true first and last name. When you are admitted to the meeting you must identify yourself as Petitioner/Plaintiff, Counsel, Defendant/Respondent, etc. and the case number you are appearing on. Failure to comply may result in denial of admittance into the proceeding.

CourtCall

Counsel approved to appear remotely who do not have access to Zoom must facilitate their appearance through CourtCall.
